HYATT REGENCY KINABALU EMBARKS ON MULTI MILLION RINGGIT RENOVATION PROJECT TO REDEFINE MODERN DINING.

KOTA KINABALU, SABAH, MALAYSIA : Since its opening in 1979, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu has earned a reputation in the city for providing authentic Sabahan hospitality and top notch cuisine with five-star service.

To keep up with the ever-changing needs and lifestyles of the new traveler, the property will be embarking on a major renovation project beginning December 2013, to upgrade its main restaurants and lobby.

Well - know Japanese designing firm, Tofu, has been engaged to give the hotel’s restaurants and lobby a makeover to epitomize the Borneo aesthetic and complement the hotel’s positioning as Kota Kinabalu’s preferred business and leisure city hotel. The new stylish upgrade will pay tribute to Sabah’s natural eco-treasures and provide guests with a truly Malaysian Borneon ambience and dining experience.

The renovation will involve the main coffeehouse Tanjung Ria Café, The Chinese Restaurant, The Atrium, the pool deck and the lobby. The restaurants will be closed in stages during the renovation period from late December 2013 and for approximately 12 months.

The first phase from January to June 2014 will involve the Atrium, main coffeehouse Tanjung Ria Café and the pool deck, followed by The Chinese Restaurant in July to October while the third and final phase will see the lobby being renovated from November to January 2015.

Once it re-opens, the new flagship restaurant will be the only restaurant of its kind in the city, and the talk of the town.

“The renovation is something we’ve been planning and looking forward to for awhile now,” said Hyatt Regency Kinabalu General Manager, Arifin Darmawan.

“We have every confidence that once completed, it will be the new restaurant destination of choice and add new life to the city’s burgeoning dining scene,” he said.

This will be the first time its legendary coffee house, Tanjung Ria Café will be undergo renovation since the Hyatt was established in 1979. The coffee house has served Ministers, visiting dignitaries and celebrities over the decades since the hotel became the first 5-star franchise in the city, and a landmark of sorts.

Its signature dish, the oxtail assam pedas, or spicy and sour oxtail stew, remains as popular as it was back when the coffee house first opened, being the most frequently ordered dish by far, and a highly prized takeaway souvenir for food – lovers.

The hotel completed a full RM44 million renovation of its 288 hotel rooms and suites and poolside in 2011.

Interesting Facts & Figures you need to know about Oktoberfest!

This celebration initially started as wedding celebration in 1810 to commemorate the union between Crown Prince Ludwig (who later became King Ludwig I) and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen at Theresienwiese (translated as Therese's meadow / field) – it is for this reason that Oktoberfest is referred to by Germans as ‘die Wiesn’ or ‘the field’ .Through the years, Oktoberfest celebrations have had a number of different elements and activities, including horse races, street parades (in traditional costumes), live music, dancing and of course the appreciation of authentic Munich-brewed beer.

Currently, Oktoberfest is a truly global celebration with almost 7 million visitors consuming over 7 million litres of beer and more than half a million chickens throughout the celebration (based on 2011 figures), which lasts between 16 – 18 days from the middle of September to the first Sunday of October. For 2013, the Oktoberfest festival proper will run from 21 September 2013 to October 6 2013 – a total of 16 days of culture, cuisine and beers

What Makes An Oktoberfest Beer?
All Oktoberfest beers must be brewed within the city limits of Munich and must also conform to the Reinheitsgebot or Bavarian Purity Law which strictly governs the production of beer in Germany by limiting the ingredients that can be used. All Oktoberfest beers are approximately 13% proof (about 6% alcohol), meaning they are a little bit stronger than their “non-Oktoberfest” variants

An Introduction to Paulaner
Paulaner was first brewed by monks from the Paulaner monastery in 1634 making it almost 380 years old – however it is still the “youngest” of the Oktoberfest Beers

Unlike the rest of the Paulaner range, Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier is not a wheat beer but instead a lager.

Paulaner Oktoberfest Bier, like all Oktoberfest beers are approximately 13% proof (about 6% alcohol), meaning they are a little bit stronger than their “non-Oktoberfest” variants

At the Oktoberfest celebration, each Oktoberfest beer operates a number of tents which
provide different drinking experiences. Paulaner is famous for three widely popular tents, namely:

Armbrustschützenzelt ‘Armbrust’ means crossbow and this tent certainly lives up to its name with a crossbow shooting range available for more than 110 years
Käfer's Wies'n-Schänke – this is a smaller tent that gets VIP visitors from all over the world and serves signature gourmet food such as “Käfer-Duck” and a roast saddle of venison.
Winzerer Fähndl – This tent is also popular amongst VIPs due to its attention to detail, celebrated oompah band called “Nockherberger” and iconic tower with a giant mug of Paulaner sitting atop it.
