HYATT REGENCY KINABALU ANNUAL GOLF INVITATIONAL 2013

KOTA KINABALU (2 OCTOBER 2013) – Hyatt Regency Kinabalu feted some 70 of its business partners in style with its eighth Golf Invitational tournament recently, giving away prizes worth more than RM10,000 including business class flights on Malaysia Airlines to Perth, Australia.

Every year, the hotel and its top business associates look forward to this prestigious event, which brings together supporters of the hotel from various business segments to engage in this popular sport on one of Borneo’s most beautiful courses.

This year, Datuk Junior Koh came in first place with 37 points while Casper Loh and Liet Col Azman Arifin came in 2nd and 3rd place with 21 and 19 points respectively.

This year, the hole-in-one prize of a Volkwagon Passat were sponsored by Volkswagen, business class flights to Perth by Malaysia Airlines, free nights at Hyatt Regency Tokyo and Grand Hyatt Guangzhou with support from IIB Insurance Brokers, Progressive Insurance and Etiqa.

While no one managed a hole-in-one, the prizes were given out as lucky draws along with hotel stays, food vouchers, golf bags and other golf accessories.

“We have always organized the tournament to cater for all levels of players, emphasizing the networking and fun aspects of the sport instead of just competitive play,” said director of sales and marketing Reuben Lim.

Players teed off on the 18-hole golf course at Sabah Golf and Country Club after a leisurely breakfast at 7am. Throughout the golfing session, the hotel catered to any hunger and thirst pangs with refreshments and snacks from the five-star kitchen served along the course.

THE ENTICING TASTE OF KYOTO-SAKE DINNER

KOTA KINABALU,SABAH-Sake, cuisine and merry-making were the order of the evening at Hyatt Regency Kinabalu's recent wine dinner.

Some 60 diners started off the evening with custom sake cocktails and japanese hor d'oeuvres like tako with wasabi mayo, crispy salmon skin and edamame while mingling with guest who consisted of chief consul of the Consular Office of Japan for Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan, Hirofumi Morikawa, Kinabalu International Hotel Chairman Datuk Gordon, Hyatt Regency Kinabalu general manager Arifin Darmawan and Winecellars managing director, sake brewery reps plus other food connoisseurs, socialites's and hotel regualrs. The event was launched with a "kagami Biraki" ceremony or breaking of the sake barrel.
KIH chairman Datuk Gordon (left), Winecellars managing director Meng Tan (2nd left) & hotel general manager Arifin Darmawan (2nd right) served out sake at the opening ceremony

The ceremony is performed at celebratory events in which the lid of the sake barrel is broken open by a wooden mallet and the sake is served to everyone present. Kagami refers to the lid of the sake barrel and biraki means "to open" so kagami-biraki literally means "opening the lid." Because of the lid's round shape, the kagami is a symbol of harmony. The kagami-biraki, therefore, represents an opening to harmony and good fortune.

Three different brewery representatives were present at the dinner-Sakura Masamune, Nanbu and Tengumai breweries each promoted the qualities of their sake.

The exquisite six-course dinner from guest chef Hironori Tamagawa from Kyoto featured fresh seafood and wagyu beef, accompanied perfectly with a series of sakes, each with its own distinct flavour and perfume.
Guest chef Hironori Tamagawa carefully prepared one of his specialty dishes before served to the guests.

Dinner started off with an amuse bouche of freshwater eel salad, or uzaku, to whet diners' appetites before the appetiser of fresh tsukuri, nigiri sushi and natto maki. Next was a seafood course of cod, scallops and prawn, impeccably plated under the watchful supervision of Chef Tamagawa himself

The impossibly tender grilled wayyu with shiro miso and shiso tempura was a big hit with the guest who couldn't get enough of it. As the merriment hit a high note, we cleanse the palate with a light soba course, to make space for easy conversation before the big finale. Dessert was a trio of strawberry sake. Macha Choux (green tea ice cream and red bean in choux pastry) and yogurt ice cream with blueberries.

The dinner also saw one of its guest, Nazri Noor celebrate his birthday with help from the restaurant.

Director of Food and Beverage Daryl Thong with Keisuke Irie of Tengumai Breweries, Yoko Suganami from Nanbu Bijin Brewing Company, Meng Tan from Winecellars and Kaori Hohyama from Sakura

The evening ended with guest being presented with a farewell gift of souvenir bottle of Sakura Masamune sake and most continued the party at Shenanigan's Fun Pub.Hyatt Regency Kinabalu Food and Beverages director Daryl Thong thanked all the guest for making the event a success as well as service staff for their hard work

HYATT RAYA VISIT TO SEKOLAH UGAMA ISLAM SABAH, TAMBUNAN

KOTA KINABALU, SABAH More than 20 members of staff and management of Hyatt Regency Kinabalu brought some Hari Raya cheer to the rural students and teachers of Sekolah Ugama Islam Sabah in Tambunan recently.

Dressed in traditional malay baju kurung and batik, the hotel had to drive for 2 hours to get to the school in Tambunan, in the interior of Sabah some 80km from Kota Kinabalu. Upon arrival, they were greeted excitedly by some 205 seven to eighteen years-old students of the school, ranging from Primary 1 to Primary 6 and from Form 1 to From 6.

The event started off with a brief address by the school’s Principal Ustazah Hajah Siti Zubaidah Abdul Rahim and Hyatt Regency Kinabalu’s general manager Arifin Darmawan, followed by a prayer before the students were treated to a sumptuous lunch buffet catered by the five-star hotel.

After a feast of fried noodles, chicken, curry puffs, assorted Raya cakes and fruits served by the Hyatt team, the students were presented with duit raya by the general manager.
Sekolah Ugama Islam Sabah Tambunan hosts Muslim students, mostly from the villages around Tambunan which are poor farming communities, at the hostel which was provided by Jabatan Hal Ehwal Agama Islam Sabah.
The hostel provides free board and food but the school has to depend on public donations for other necessities and the odd treats.
Ustazah Zubaidah said the school and hostel is always appreciative of any assistance from generous contributors particularly the Hyatt Regency Kinabalu which has been paying regular yearly visits for Hari Raya for many years.
The Hyatt Regency Kinabalu team also donated groceries including cooking oil, rice, vermicelli noodles, Milo, sugar and biscuits for the students, as well as used pillow cases, bedsheets and clothes from the employees.  Hyatt Regency Kinabalu will continue its efforts to support the community in the future in line with its Thrive platform to address needs of the local communities.

Hyatt Regency Kinabalu, under their Hyatt Thrive corporate social responsibility programme recognizes the importance of helping make the communities in which they operate.
