New kid on the block, Gerard Tan joins the Sutera Harbour family as our new-ly appointed Deputy Chief Executive Officer.
A graduate of the American Hotel & Motel Association and a Certified Hotel Administrator, Gerard will oversee the Group’s business development and growth as well as to foster stronger partnerships with the hotel owner.
Gerard who originates from Singapore, is a versatile and seasoned hotelier. He brings with him more than 40 years of hospitality experience in Asia namely, Singapore and Thailand which gives him solid understanding of both Thai and Malay culture.
Starting his career within the F&B department in Singapore at a tender age of 16, Gerard is an ambitious and hard-working man who progressively rose to be an F&B manager at age 28 and thereafter the position of General Manager at a few luxury hotels in Thailand. His last posting prior to joining us was as GM of the Millenium Resort Patong, Phuket.
An individual with a proven track record of success and passion, Gerard was the first foreigner to receive the Best Management and Employee Relationship Award from the Thai Ministry of Labour back in 1996. His strong leadership also helped The Racha resort achieve multiple international awards including “Top 10 Best Beach Resorts in the World” by Tablet Hotels in 2008, “Top 100 Best Hotel by Conde Nast, 2009″ and “Top 10 Best Beach Resorts in South East Asia” by Asia Tatler Magazine in 2012.
To add on to the honors, Gerard was recognised for his contributions in the Tsunami Humanitarian Operations between December 2004 and January 2005 by the Ministry of Home Affairs, Singapore. He was the GM of Banthai Beach Resort, Phuket where the monstrous tsunami showed no mercy and struck Phuket on 26 December 2004. Rising to the occassion, he led his team of associates who helped all 600 guests to safety. Although the hotel was badly damaged, thankfully no lives were lost.
Now at 61 years young, Gerard doesn’t let the years slow him down. Chatty, warm and utterly unassuming, Gerard’s first posting to Sabah has already had him smitten with love for our beautiful Kota Kinabalu city. He is amazed that Sabah has 32 indigenous ethnic groups with their own unique cultural and traditional heritage.
“Sabah is incredible as it has something for everyone; from local residents, Malaysians to foreigners. Its diversity is tremendous, from its people to its rich flora and fauna, and this makes Sabah a unique and delightful place to visit. I am thrilled to be a part of the team and look forward to share my experience as we continue to build up Sutera Harbour Resort as one of the leading hospitality, leisure and lifestyle group in Asia, Europe and Middle East.” — Gerard Tan, Deputy CEO of Sutera Harbour Resort.
