TOURISM MALAYSIA LAUNCHES VISIT MALAYSIA 2020 CAMPAIGN WEBSITE

In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2020 (VM2020), Tourism Malaysia has launched the VM2020 Website Campaign which can be accessed at vm2020.malaysia.travel.

The campaign is a digital initiative by Tourism Malaysia to support the Visit Malaysia 2020 campaign and to portray Malaysia as one of the top destinations to visit in 2020.

YBhg. Datuk Musa Yusof, Director General of Tourism Malaysia said, "With an enhanced digital experience and experiential content, we hope to entice more international and local tourists to visit the various destinations in our country, in support of Visit Malaysia 2020."

The campaign aims to feed both the international and domestic travellers with valuable information on Malaysia’s numerous tourist attractions, including recommended destinations, ‘must-try’ meals, travel itineraries, and things to do in Malaysia.

Users are able to know more about Malaysia through diverse informative articles which have been categorised into adventure, wildlife, nature, islands and beaches, waterfalls, caves and forests, food, and family, among others.

Other information such as deals and packages as well as events and happenings in the year 2020 are also featured in the website.

A unique feature of the website campaign is the “Insta Worthy” section which is powered by user-generated content (UGC). Travellers’ Instagram photos and videos may stand a chance to be featured in this section, as long as they are tagged with Tourism Malaysia’s official Instagram page (@malaysia.truly.asia) and includes #VisitMalaysia2020, #MalaysiaTrulyAsia and #CutiCutiMalaysia hashtags upon posting. All photos and videos included in the section will be credited to the original user. The goal of including the ‘Insta Worthy’ section is to strengthen the relationship with the community, especially with millennials.

The addition of new exclusive features are also planned for the future development of the campaign, while content for the website will be updated from time to time to share fresh news.

A chatbot will be utilized to provide FAQs and is expected to provide an enhanced user experience across the website. Besides that, industry players will be introduced to an online form submission as an efficient platform for all merchants to submit their special deals and packages to be promoted in the VM2020 website. The campaign also aims to boost community engagement and extend the implementation of UGC by developing a platform for travel experiences and recommendations submission.

AirAsia opens first restaurant serving dishes from in-flight menu

AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes(centre) is so confident the carrier’s Southeast Asian fare will be popular with diners on the ground that he is aiming to franchise the concept internationally, with a New York outlet an ultimate goal. NSTP/MOHD YUSNI ARIFFIN.

KUALA LUMPUR: Airline food has long been the butt of travellers’ jokes, but AirAsia Group Bhd is seeking to turn that notion on its head - opening its first restaurant on Monday featuring dishes based on its in-flight menu.

AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes is so confident the carrier’s Southeast Asian fare will be popular with diners on the ground that he is aiming to franchise the concept internationally, with a New York outlet an ultimate goal.

“Our dream is to have one in Times Square,” he said.

The carrier, which pioneered the budget airline model in Asia - including charging extra for food - launched its flagship Santan and T&CO restaurant at a mall in Kuala Lumpur, marking its first foray into the retail food business.

General manager of Santan Restaurant and T&CO Cafe, Catherine Goh, said 30 per cent of the restaurant’s menu come from AirAsia’s existing in-flight menu, which includes classics such as Pak Nasser’s nasi lemak.

The name “Santan“, already used on AirAsia’s in-flight menus, is taken from the coconut pulp milk that is a staple in Southeast Asian cooking.

Goh said a product development team of five chefs and culinary arts students took nine months to come up with the rest of the menu.

“For example, they would meet with our Philippines colleagues, who shortlisted the best restaurants where they would try the dishes and try to replicate the flavours,” she told Reuters.

“Once they’ve developed the product, they will send it to the Filipino team to get their feedback, whether it’s authentic enough.”

AirAsia plans to open five outlets this year, and 100 over the next three to five years.

“We decided to own several restaurants but the bigger business would be franchising, really, because we feel we want to harness young entrepreneurial talent around the region who would like to be part of this business,” said Aireen Omar, group president of AirAsia’s non-airline subsidiary RedBeat Ventures.

Aireen said AirAsia’s digital business, focused on e-commerce and lifestyle offerings, has the potential to overtake its airline business.

AirAsia embarked on a diversification drive to become an asset-light, digitally focused firm after the US$1 billion sale of its leasing business in March 2018.

Its non-airline businesses include financial services BigPay, and travel and lifestyle arm AirAsia.com, which Fernandes said are targeted to be earnings positive in 2021 and next year, respectively. - Reuters

Celebrate Asia with Gerard Tan DCEO of Sutera Harbour Resort: Travel back in time on Borneo’s oldest running steam train

The North Borneo Railway steam train is the oldest running one in Sabah. (Photo: Sutera Harbour Resort)
Fancy stepping back into the colonial charm of British North Borneo? A distinctly memorable way to enjoy Borneo’s verdant greenery is to indulge in the luxury of steam train travel aboard the North Borneo Railway.

You would be enjoying the views from the vintage Vulcan steam engine, manufactured by the Vulcan Foundry Ltd, in Lancashire, UK – the last of a fleet of locomotives that have travelled across Borneo since the 1880s.

The North Borneo Railway is a joint project between the Sutera Harbour Resort and the Sabah State Railway Department launched in 2000 to commemorate Kota Kinabalu achieving city status. It is the only train that services the island of Borneo, and runs twice a week from Tanjung Aru in Kota Kinabalu.

Covering 38.5km between Kota Kinabalu, the state capital of Sabah, and Papar, an agricultural town known as the “rice bowl of Sabah”, thanks to the paddy fields that dominate the area, this railway offers a unique sight-seeing experience for visitors, from views of the South China Sea to protected forests.

ALL IN THE DETAILS

For train enthusiasts – or fans of Agatha Christie or Harry Potter, for that matter – riding the North Borneo Railway train promises to be a treat in itself. The Vulcan has been beautifully maintained and remains in mint condition. The non-air-conditioned train allows passengers the opportunity to enjoy the fresh air as it travels through the rainforest of Borneo.

Painted a rich deep teal and cream, the train and its carriages bear the gold emblem of a tiger holding a wheel. Inside each carriage are eight two-person seats set face to face and separated by a table. These seats are elegantly upholstered in regimental striped-fabric. The wooden frames are polished and all bear the railway emblem.

“The carriages were designed in the 19th century with unique oakwood, fabric seats and panel lamps that go back a hundred years,” shared Gerard Tan, deputy chief executive officer of Sutera Harbour Resort.

He added that to get and keep the steam engine going, an age-old fuelling method is employed. “This train uses only a very unique wood called mangrove. To get the mangrove wood is not easy. You have to cut and then you have to dry it and it’s very expensive.”

Incidentally, Sabah has the largest mangrove area of any state in Malaysia – over 232,000 hectares. However, much of this area is protected under conservation laws as mangroves are home to diverse flora and fauna.

Borneo Coffee Festival 4th Edition 08-10 Nov 2019 • Suria Sabah Shopping Mall

KOTA KINABALU: The fourth edition of the Borneo Coffee Festival has attracted nearly 20,000 visitors, over the weekend.

Borneo Coffee Alliance (BCA) chairman Dick Lee said they managed to pull more crowd this year thanks to the Asian-standard latte art competition.

“We hope to provide more opportunity for our local baristas to show their talents,” he said after the closing ceremony, at Suria Sabah, here, Sunday.

“We estimated that there were between 6,000 and 8,000 visitors per day throughout the three-day event.

“All 65 exhibitors were also happy with the number of crowd visiting their booths…some even had to replenish their products two to three times per day.

“Some of them had been with the festival since three years ago and they had been anticipating the event every year.”

Noting that the number of exhibitors and visitors had increased, Lee said, the organising committee is planning to hold the festival at a bigger venue next year.

“The committee members are still discussing about it. Some parties had shown deep interest in joining the festival but could not do so due to the limited number of booths.

“As such, we may choose a bigger venue next year,” he said.

Organised by the BCA under the Federation of Sabah Industries (FSI), Borneo Coffee Festival offered a wide range of coffee-related products and services.

Aimed to generate more awareness and to promote ‘coffee culture’ among the society, Borneo Coffee Festival features both local and international exhibitors.

The main highlights were the Borneo Latte Art and the Borneo Brewer’s Cup competitions.

William Tiong from Sarawak, emerged champion in the Borneo Latte Art competition which was participated by nearly 30 baristas.

He brought home RM500, a return flight ticket to Shanghai, China for the Professional Coffee Athletics (PCA) Latte Art Grand Final, a trophy, and sponsored goodies.

In second place was Patrick Wong while Kevin Chew grabbed the third spot.

Tiong said, he had been training hard on his craft for more than half a year.

“In latte art, you need more practice…you cannot join any competition without proper preparation.

“I have joined several competitions since 2018 and I think the competitors were very good in the Borneo Latte Art competition.”

The Borneo Brewer’s Cup was won by Clarissa Chen, while Tiong won the second place and Angel Bannister held the third spot.

Chen was delighted as she won the competition in her maiden attempt.

“I have been a barista for about one and a half year. Initially, I felt nervous when I entered the competition ground, but afterwards I was excited as I can gain more knowledge and experience.

“Most of my competitors are my seniors in this field and this achievement motivates me to be better,” she said.

The prizes were presented by Youth and Sports Minister Phoong Jin Zhe.
